What is sushi?

The biggest wrong convention about sushi is that it is raw fish wrapped in rice. This is not entirely true. First of all, cooked fish is also used in making sushi. There are many other ingredients that are used including vegetables, grilled fish and sometimes even eggs are used in making sushi. It is not at all a complicated process.

Ingredients required

There are some basic ingredients that are must in making sushi. First of them is rice, which makes the base of the dish. The rice comprises the main starch and carbohydrate part of the dish. Then there is the fish. It can be raw fish like salmon, or cooked fish. Cooked fish may be boiled fish, grilled fish or spiced fish. There are different types of fish that can be used.

After that comes the vegetable. Vegetable gives a bit of variety to the dish, although it is not absolutely compulsory to include vegetables. Another important ingredient is vinegar, which is used to mix the rice and add the acid element to the dish.

Other necessities

Another important ingredient is the seaweed. The seaweed is used to roll the rice and fish in together, and keeps the whole thing in the tube like shape. Also, a bamboo mat is traditionally used in rolling out the sushi, although again this is not a compulsion and any other efficient rolling technique may be used as well.

Things to remember

The most important thing is to learn how to cut the sushi into uniform pieces. If done in the wrong way, there is a changing of mashing everything up. Also, there is also a general tendency to sometime apply more of vinegar than required which makes it too acidic. The right balance of flavors is key in making sushi.
